Juanita Joe, DV Coordinator 1745 Silver Eagle Drive Elko, Nevada 89801 (Mailing address) Work hours: 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. |
On December 18, 2006, Juanita Joe was hired as part-time Domestic Violence Coordinator for the Elko Band Domestic Violence Program. She retired as the TeMoak Tribe Alcohol/Drug Abuse Counselor and Prevention Specialist, a position she held from 1988-2003. She received all her training for these positions and received certificates including Advocate for the Domestic Violence Program. She enjoys individual counseling and providing domestic violence education. She has been sober for over 27 years. She is also a survivor of domestic violence.
The Elko Band Council received this Family Violence Prevention and Services Grant from the Administration on Children, Youth and Families Bureau at the United Stated Department of Health & Human Services in Washington, DC. The services provided according to the grant and federal register are as follows:
Shelters: We will transport the women/children, and elders, to the Harbor House for safety. The men's safety place will be elsewhere. Some families prefer counseling from our program then leave their homes provided that the abuser is escorted out of the home. Depending on the situation, the other safe places are homes, hotels, motels, etc.
Following is a list of other Special Needs-Related services and assistance for the victims and their family members:
Individual/family counseling, services to women/children/teenagers and men, crisis intervention, 24-hour calls, information and referral, legal advocacy, transportation, housing advocacy. Emergency child care, other safe plans and information about Domestic Violence is available to them.
Community Outreach: Multi-Prevention Educators: A Domestic Violence Program Coordinator is part of this prevention activity held every Thursday of each month to present education about Domestic Violence and its elements (different abuses). This activity is open to any program that wants to educate the people about what services we can provide for them. Monthly average participants is 90. Included is the potluck and raffle.
(Federal Register)
Family Violence: Any act, or threatened act, of violence, including any forceful detention of an individual, which: (a) results or threatens to result in physical injury, and (b) is committed by a person against another individual (including an elderly person) to whom such person is, or was, related by blood or marriage, or otherwise legally related, or with whom such person is, or was, lawfully residing.
Violence against Women is not a Native tradition. Abuse wasn't considered a "private family matter." We must deal with the reality that we are hurting each other. We must begin to responsibly address these issues as Native peoples. To blame each other is not productive (That would be acting out the internalized oppression that we experience as a People.). It is important that we examine our past and know where we were, understand how we got to be where we are today, and celebrate that the solutions to the problems of today can be found in our Traditions.
